Debunking Common Myths About Ozone in Pools & Spas

At UltraPure Water Quality, we’ve been designing and manufacturing ozone systems for swimming pools and spas since 1982. And in that time, we’ve heard every myth, misconception, and misunderstanding about ozone you can imagine. While ozone is one of the most powerful and effective water treatment tools available, confusion still persists, especially among new pool owners, spa dealers, and even some industry professionals.
It’s time to clear the water. Let’s dive into the most common myths about ozone in pools and spas and explain the real science behind why ozone is such a valuable asset in modern water care.
Myth #1: “Ozone Replaces Chlorine Completely”
The Truth: Ozone is a powerful oxidizer, not a residual sanitizer.
While ozone can destroy bacteria, viruses, organic contaminants, and chloramines far more effectively than chlorine or bromine, it doesn't remain in the water. Once it reacts, it’s gone. That’s why you still need a small amount of a traditional sanitizer (like chlorine) in your pool or spa to provide a residual that protects water between ozone treatments.
Bottom line: Ozone reduces chlorine use significantly, but it doesn’t eliminate the need for a residual sanitizer.
Myth #2: “Ozone Is Dangerous to Swimmers”
The Truth: In properly designed systems (like our UltraPure BlueForce™ units), ozone never comes in contact with bathers.
Ozone is injected into the circulation line and safely used up as it oxidizes contaminants in the water. By the time water returns to the pool or spa, the ozone has done its job and reverted back to oxygen. There's no risk of exposure when the system is installed and operated correctly.
Our systems meet safety standards and are designed to use the pool filter as a reaction vessel to ensure complete reaction before water reaches the pool or spa.
Myth #3: “Ozone is Too Complicated for Homeowners”
The Truth: Ozone systems are actually easier to maintain than many other pool technologies.
Our BlueForce ozone and UV systems are simple to install, with low maintenance needs. Unlike salt systems, they don’t corrode pool equipment or require constant monitoring of salt levels. Unlike manual chemical treatments, there’s no measuring or guessing, the system handles oxidation for you.
Once installed, most homeowners forget it’s even running, until they realize how crystal-clear and fresh their water looks and smells.
Myth #4: “Ozone Doesn’t Work in Hot Tubs or Portable Spas”
The Truth: Ozone is especially effective in spas and hot tubs.
With small water volumes, high bather loads, and warm temperatures, spas are the perfect environment for ozone. In fact, most portable spa manufacturers include an ozone-ready port or preinstalled injector, and for good reason. Ozone helps break down body oils, lotions, and organics that cause cloudy water and scum rings.
Plus, by oxidizing used-up bromine or chlorine, ozone actually helps regenerate sanitizer levels, extending the life of your spa chemicals.
Myth #5: “Ozone Is Just Marketing Hype”
The Truth: Ozone is used worldwide in drinking water, wastewater treatment, aquariums, and bottled water production because it works.
Ozone is not new. It’s not a gimmick. It’s real science, backed by over a century of industrial and municipal use. UltraPure’s systems harness this proven technology and tailor it for backyard pools, portable spas, and aquatic facilities.
We’re proud to say that many of our customers who switch to ozone never want to go back. The water looks better, smells better, and feels better, and they use fewer chemicals to keep it that way.
Final Thought: Ozone Doesn’t Replace Everything — But It Makes Everything Better
At UltraPure, we’re not in the business of selling silver bullets. We’re in the business of building reliable, effective systems that work with your existing sanitation program to give you the cleanest, clearest, healthiest water possible.
Whether it’s ozone, UV, or AOP, our mission is simple: let nature do the heavy lifting so you don’t have to.
