Many pool owners assume that installing an ozone or UV system will instantly eliminate chlorine smell and irritation. It is a reasonable assumption, but it is not the full picture. Understanding what is actually happening in your water can completely change how your pool feels.
Let’s break it down clearly.
1. Chlorine Is Not the Real Problem
That strong “chlorine smell” people complain about is not caused by chlorine itself. It is caused by chloramines. Chloramines form when chlorine reacts with sweat, body oils, sunscreen, cosmetics, and other organic contaminants.
When you smell that odor or feel eye and skin irritation, it usually means your chlorine is overworked. It is spending its energy fighting contamination instead of maintaining clean, comfortable water.
In simple terms, the issue is not too much chlorine. It is chlorine that is overwhelmed.
2. Ozone and UV Do Not Replace Chlorine
There is a common misconception that ozone or UV means no chlorine. That is not accurate.

That heavy, chemical feeling is often the result of byproducts already formed in the water. Even if your chlorine level is correct, the presence of chloramines and partially oxidized contaminants affects comfort.
Two pools can have identical chlorine readings and feel completely different. The difference is often how effectively contaminants are oxidized before chlorine gets involved.
